Over 60 people from across SBN and Social Value Aotearoa’s networks gathered at Wellington Zoo on 23 February to discover how to make sure social or environmental programmes are making a difference. Check out what we learnt!
Thanks to the expert insights of our fabulous speakers – Simon Faivel, of Social Ventures Australia, and Sea Rotmann, of Sustainable Energy Advice – we took away six key learnings. Read on for a bite-size summary, but first here’s a flavour of the evening in a 40-second video created by Whitney Nicholls-Potts.
Here’s what we learnt:
- Creating meaningful behaviour change requires all the right people to be involved, but often the intermediary or end user isn’t. Make sure you involve and engage all relevant people so you measure what’s important to them.
- Story-telling can help to create a common language around change and helps maintain interest in a change programme.
- Effective change requires changing habitual behaviours, even though habits are difficult to break.
- There is no such thing as individualised behaviour; what we do is social and collaboration is key to success.
- Understand the things you have direct control over and measure them, rather than over-complicating the process by trying to measure things you don’t directly influence.
- Creating a safe space for feedback is critical.
